Teachers in all the six education divisions across the country have cried foul following government’s decision to go back on its promise to give loans to them for purchasing or constructing decent houses.

A senior manager at South West Education Division in the Southern Region confirmed the controversial decision by government.

“Around the months of February and March last year government promised loans to all teachers in the six divisions to enable them to improve their houses. In our division, we were promised a loan amount of K27 million.
“The promise for the loans aroused a lot of interest among teachers. Some teachers submitted loan applications. But later on government rescinded the decision, a development that did not please the teachers,” he said.

He said government did not disclose the reason for reversing its decision on the promised loans.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Lindiwe Chide asked for more time
to find out about the issue when contacted on Tuesday.

General Secretary for the Teachers’ Union of Malawi (TUM) Denis Kalekeni confirmed both the loan promise that government made and its reversal on the matter.

But he said government needs to seriously consider establishing a loan scheme to help teachers improve their living conditions.

“Teachers are going through very hard life due to financial constraints. Therefore as a body that looks after the welfare of Teachers, we would like to ask government to set up a special fund for improving their living conditions,” Kalekeni said.
