As the country is awaiting verdict on the infamous Nachipanti killings in Blantyre, a similar case has been reported in Balaka where a young mother was killed in gruesome murder.
Janet Ingani, 30, was killed by an unknown person who was wearing only underwear by cutting her bottom and removing intestines at Chingondo Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka on February 27. The removal of the intestines happened as Ingani was still alive. A member of community policing in the area who also reported the matter to police, Wonderford Tchale, said Ingani, who had a four week old baby was dragged into a bush by the Nachipanti man where he cut the anus of the deceased and removed about ½ a metre of large intestines. “She lost consciousness in the process but after she regained her consciousness, she went to her house, took her baby and went to the house of Mr Willard Manjani where she narrated her ordeal. But as she was narrating her story, she lost strength and died,” said Tchale. Balaka Police public relations officer Titani Chadwala confirmed the incident and said no one has been arrested so far but the hunt for the unknown “Nachipanti” is still going on. Chadwala also said when villagers went to the deceased’s house, they found struggle signs from the house to the scene of the incident where they found the removed large intestines. “We visited the scene and a postmortem was conducted at Balaka District Hospital and the doctors said she died as a result of internal bleeding secondary to bowel mutilation,” said Chadwala. The incident will remind Malawians of the gruesome death of a four-year-old Ndirande boy who was allegedly killed by a man in his underwear popularly known as Nachipanti. Jack Bandawe, the alleged Nachipanti, is in custody waiting for his murder trial.
