DD2Latiffa Malunjika's two late strikes steered DD Sunshine to retain the Women Football national Cup  after beating Blantyre Eleven 2-1 at Kamuzu Stadium Sunday.

It was a case  so close and yet so far after Blantyre 11 failed to sustain the lead within the last two minutes.

Thandi Kasiya put Blantyre 11 in the lead after heading a cross from Sungama Msiska early in the first half.

Blantyre 11 dominated the first half and they forced DD Sunshine goalkeeper Roges Zidana to make several saves.

The home side could have extended the lead in the first half but forward Loveness Nyakamera betrayed her counterparts when she opted to play a back pass instead of shooting.

After resumption, Blantyre 11 continued pushing forward in search of another goal that never came.

Striker Shira Kapasula Dimba tormented defenders at will and her shot in the 56th minute was safely tipped over the crossbar by the in-form Zidana.

DD Sunshine skipper Chisomo Kazisonga defended superbly to frustrate Blantyre 11 chances of extending the lead.

The sweeper nicknamed 'Song' made timely clearances and was composed when initiating moves.

DD Sunshine eventually took control of the game in the second half but they sweated to get an equaliser as Maggie Chombo was equally impressive at the back for Blantyre 11.

However, two minutes to full time Malunjika collected a pass to beat a defender and then slot the ball past the advancing Blantyre 11 goal minder Thoko Mwase.

Mwase had done well in the early minutes during the better part of the match but she failed to rescue her team from Malunjika's strike.

As most spectators were thinking that the game would go into extra time, Malunjika produced another moment of madness to score the important goal in the stoppage time after capitalising on defensive mix-up.

Blantyre 11's Chombo could not understand what had happened.

“Perhaps we were giving away balls needlessly,” she said.

DD Sunshine coach Richard Chipungu said he advised his troops to continue pressing forward.

“I told them not to give up and that they should play up to the last whistle,” he said.

The team's sponsor David Dube thanked the players for defending the championship.

“Our approach was somehow casual but still more the players fought hard to get the win. The money will help us to buy fuel to travel to South Africa on Tuesday,” he said.
