Mr. Price sacks six over tea PDF Print E-mail

Six employees of the newly opened Mr. Price retail shop in Blantyre have been sacked on allegations that they were taking tea in the storeroom when they were expected to be serving customers.

The employees, however, claim that it was during their break when their chief executive officer Eve Debbie found them taking tea and sacked them without notice.

Both Debbie and Stores Manager Annabel Mzumara confirmed the sacking of the six employees in an interview Monday.

A dismissal letter for one of the employees signed by Mzumara indicated that she was sacked because the shop found that the skills level, work ethics, attitude and ability to follow instructions were not to the standard required by the shop.

“We hereby wish to advise that your services with our company are terminated with immediate effect.

“We have found that your skills level, work ethic, attitude and ability to follow management instructions are not to the standard required by our company as laid out in the contract of employment signed by you,” reads the letter in part.

The company gave the sacked employees a 24 hour notice.

However, the sacked employees said they were not given the 24 hour notice as per their conditions.

The other employee claimed that he was sacked because he went to attend his brother’s funeral.

But Debbie said the company established that the employee lied that his brother died.

The employees were not brought before a disciplinary hearing as required by law.

Debbie and Mzumara insisted that the workers were fired mainly because of insubordination.

However, their dismissal letters does not include the insubordination charge whose first course of disciplinary action is dismissal.

The two managers also claimed that they have been giving the employees verbal warnings due to their insubordination but it did not work, claims disputed by the workers.

Mr. Price is a retail shop in Blantyre and was opened last year.

Laziness at work in Malawi must now be punished heavily as this is a social
disease in our work ethics which has to be wipped out from amongst us.
