At least six heads of state and government have confirmed to attend President Bingu wa Mutharika’s wedding this Saturday in Lilongwe, the State House has confirmed.
Director General of State Residences Edward Sawerengera said Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and his Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai have confirmed their availability. Others are Mozambican prime minister Ali, Tanzanian Vice-President Ali Mohammed, Rwandan Prime Minister Bernard Makuza, Swaziland Prime Minister Barnabas Dhlamini. Zambian president Rupiah Banda will be represented by his aide Vernon Mwanga but other dignitaries include African Commission chairperson Ping and the Comesa Secretary General, Mr. Ngwenya. Zambia’s former president Kenneth Kaunda jetted into the country Thursday through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe for the same occasion and will be joined by former Mozambican president Joachim Chissano, according to Sawerengera. While ten years ago former president Bakili Muluzi spent about K50 million when he wedded his sweetheart Patricia Shanil Fukula, the cost of the wedding between Mutharika and the First Lady Designate is yet to be known.
Sawerengera insisted that it was too early to start estimating figures before the wedding had taken place because costs depend on a number of variable factors. “Coming up with the figure on the wedding expenditure like this one is not easy as its budget is fluid because a lot of things change as preparations are progressing,” he said. “For instance, some people we planned would come, might not come or even more people might come than planned. We are still receiving figures from the committees, as at the moment I do not have the exact figure,” he said. However, Sawerengera said his committee was planning for several thousands of both invited and uninvited people. “So what you need to know is that all those invited guests have to eat and drink including those that are not invited,” stated Sawerengera. He hinted at the fact that presidential weddings are “not ordinary ones.”
Mutharika weds Callista at Civo Stadium and later reception will be held at New State House in the Capital City. Two marquees have been erected at New State House with one accommodating 3, 500 delegates and another one 1, 700 delegates to enable more Malawians witness the historic wedding.

He explained that he did not know how much will be spent as various wedding committees were still filing in their expenditures to the main committee.
