Zambian President Rupiah Banda is expected to arrive in the country later on Monday for a one day state visit.
However, government officials were tight lipped on the reasons for his coming to Malawi, the second this year. According to state-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and Malawi Television (TVM), Banda is expected to arrive in the country through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe at 10am Monday and leave at 3pm the same day. State House press officer Albert Mungomo said in an interview Sunday that he was not aware of the reasons why Banda wants to meet President Bingu wa Mutharika. “What I know is that the president will host a luncheon in honour of His Excellency president Banda, but I might have other details later in the day,” he said. Both Minister of Foreign Affairs Etta Banda, her deputy Augustine Mtendere and Principal Secretary Anthony Livuza could not be reached on their mobile phones Sunday. Both Mungomo and Ning’ang’a said Rupiah Banda’s visit is official.
