The British government through its Department for International Development (DfID) has announced funding of up to £50 million (K12 billion) over the next four years to support implementation of Malawi’s national education plans.

Head of DfID in Malawi Gwen Hines announced in Lilongwe on Friday that the funding, to be pooled with other donors, will enable the Malawi government implement its education sector plan which includes construction of 2,000 classrooms and training of 16,000 teachers in the country by 2013.

The funding will also help government implement a programme to admit more girls into secondary schools, reduce repetition rates and class sizes and provide cash grants to all 6,000 primary schools in the country.

One of the key projects under the DfID grant is the construction of a new teacher training college in Phalombe at £2.3 million, according to Hines.

“This will transform the system and deliver better quality education to all Malawians,” Hines said.

According to DfID, the funding builds on Britain’s £53 million contribution to the education sector from 2001 to 2009, which directly provided over 2,400 classrooms and 18 million new text books for primary schools as well as initiating Direct Support to Schools cash grants.

DfID gives Malawi £75 Million in aid to Malawi each year, including about 20 million in budgetary support, to help the country with its growth and development.

This is good for DFID to do for educationb sector..hopefuly other SWAP donors
will pledge their contributions. What is more important is to fulfill the
pledge in time...Government should also be acountable and transparent on the use
of the funds.so that the money benefits those intended.
