Special Olympics ball, which is on global tour, is expected to arrive in the country today from Tanzania before reaching its final destination in South Africa during the Fifa World Cup.

According to Special Olympics Malawi (SOM) board chairman Peter Mazunda,  they will hold an event at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday to celebrate the ball, which set off at Battersea Park in London in January.

Mazunda in an e-mail message said the event would help people with intellectual disabilities to play.

“The ball is not just like any other ball. It is football’s equivalent to the Olympic Torch. Every four years, the ball kicks off from its Mount Olympus-Battersea Park,” he said.

“The ball is specially tailored for the poorest African communities. It is durable and repairable because it is made especially for the difficult playing surfaces in Africa,” he said.

According to SOM press release,   the 2010 ball was aimed at  promoting unified football in various Special Olympic programmes.

“Everyone who comes across it can sign-it and kick-it,” read the release.

Special Olympics Africa (SOA) has programmes in over 30 African countries and the ball will be visiting a number of them along the way.

The region will be participating in a number of activities leading up to the World Cup. These include the participation of a Special Olympic team in the Fifa Football For Hope Festival.

Special Olympics Movement transforms communities by inspiring people to open their minds, to accept and include people with intellectual disabilitiesss.
